Hamilton Park came in to Zinas same day and related 2 remarkable incidents in his experience as Brighams Stewart for his family in the early ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p098.jpg) days of this country. First was- in the grasshopper war of 1853 & 4 when there little or no grain raised and merchants were buying grain & had stored much for export speculation. Brigham one day went among all the traders and told them they must not sell any bread- stuff to go out of the valley for people were needed it al -- he would pay them for it and would send & get it which he did and stored it for the coming season. Then he gave order to Hamilton Park, Steward of his family to issue only certan pounds per hed per week and let not love or favor to any one make him deviate from that order or he would call for the keys & he could step down and out. ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p099.jpg) Second was of his order to save people masacreed at mountain meadows. given to a man named Hazlem who said that he rode 300 miles to carry that order from President Young, who when he gave the order to Hazlem said "go as fast as horse flesh can carry you _ spare neither flesh nor expense, ride night and day for that company must be spared to pass out of our settlements- now go & God bless you". Mr. Park said that Hazlem stood in full horseman rig with hat in hand _ no coat_ big spurrs _ light caparison for horse and as soon as the order was given and the ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p100.jpg) word come "go" he sprang into the sadde with a leap & the horse was on the run from the first jump. Before he reached John D. Lee the job was done & the company was no more. When Mr. Park tried to express President Youngs great anxiety and earnestness to prevent the murder of that company he choked with tears and strong emotion. I wrote her history briefly up to the death of Presendia and after my return from Ogden I sent by mail what I wrote after Zina Card parted with us on ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p101.jpg) the day of going to Ogden same evenign she & Bro. Card started for canada. She gave me five dollars for past expenses & Card gave me five for future expenses. Niece Zina planned with me that as Chariton was coming to Canada near the last of June her mother would come with him to canada also and remain there a month durign during which time her mothers monthly dues from Brighams estate would be fufficient to bring me to canada & return _ then we should stay a month ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p102.jpg) and then the dues would return her mother to Salt Lake. I left my sister Zina at West Weber with Chariton and came home stoping in Salt Lake over night and arriving at home on Sat. 3 weeks from time I left. The strain of mind and wear of body I had endured left me exausted for a week or two, - notwithstanding that I kept at work in garden all I could. The object of her design for me to go to Canada was to correct, revise and add to what I had ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p103.jpg) written while her son Joseph should typewrite the whole, ready for publication. Soon after I arrived home I received a letter from Chariton at Salt Lake stating that he & wife with youngest children had come with his mother to see that she was comfortable and taken care of at her home _ while his boys took care of the farm & home in Weber & since reaching Salt Lake one of his children had developed scarlet fever and with her in a tent he was quarantined ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p104.jpg) in the back yard. Towards the latter part of May Thomas D. Mendenhall, my son=in-law left the store where he had engaged many years, and took to the deserts and mountains in Nevada on a grading con= tract for the SanDiego Los Angeles & Salt Lake Rail Road, for a change of occupation for health and the prospect of greater accumulation of means. One week after he left home and as soon as his wife was able to ride in safety, We took her and the 2 children ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p105.jpg) home to the home of her childhood, while he should be gone _ probably all summer, for comfort and convenience of ourselves as well as her, as most assuredly she was always "a Comforter" and it was convenient for both her and us at home, and a source of dily enjoyment. Oliver, our son, was general watermaster for all the waters of Springville again this year, which office so monoplized his time that he was with us or even his own family, but little, ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p106.jpg) of the time. And, I feel that it is a blessing to the people that he is the water= master as he is a model man for justice, honesty and patience. On the 6th of July <1901> I attended Stake Priesthood meeting at Provo - in the general instructions from one of the Presidency a sort of a plan was sugg= ested by which it was thought the people might be got out to meetings ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p107.jpg) on Sundays, as the people were fast relaxing their from feelings of sacred= ness for this Sabath and making it a day of amus= ement & recreation. After the speaker closed he gave liberty for anyone to speak. I went from the congregation to the Stand for I felt full of the spirit and I rehearsed the the establishment of the church of Christ and the establishment of certain officers to manage every department of the govern- ment of the Church and I did not think it possible for a mortal man to devise ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p108.jpg) a substitute plan for the controll & management of His chuch that will answer the purpose of governing the church & keeping the whole body alive & healthy like the plan Jesus has appoint ed. He has appointed the Lesser Priesthood to as local management of all the Church. I went on and repea- ted the duties of Priests & Teachers as laid down in the Doctrne & Coven= ants and closed with a promise that if all the Priests and Teac= hers will do their duties in their several ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p109.jpg) callings all our meeting houses will be filled, on Sabath days. After I had closed the President called upon Proffessor Geo. Brimhall, the acting Principal of the B. Y. Academy to come to the Stand and talk to great audience of Stake officials. He responded by brief remarks upon the subject of Sabath breaking and closed with this statement. _ "The brother before me has struck the key note to the whole question". ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p110.jpg) The 13 & 14 of July, 1901 was quarterly conf- erence. Binks remarked that he remembered hear= ing President Woodruff say that Joseph F. would yet be the President of this church and that he would see it whether in the flesh or out of it. Binks continued to see people running about in great commotion & connfusion inquiring what they should do? Binks said to some of them "follow the teachings of Joseph Smith ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p124.jpg) the prophet _ he said that there would always remain 7 of the twelve apostles that would have the truth - and that it is best to keep in the main current". The men mentioned as dead were all alive when he dreamed the ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p125.jpg) dream which was in 1894. I sent the copy to John Smith the Patriach to the Church and wait for a reply. The reply came in due time stating that the dream or vision was for him, Binks, and not for the Bublic. I so informed Brother Binks. Met brother John Smith again in the morning and received further instructions in relation to the duties and methods of offi- ciating in my office as Patriarch. ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p133.jpg) Dec. 22 – 1901 By proclamation of the first Presidency of the church this day was observed by sacred and appropriate services as the Birthday anniversary of the Prophet Joseph Smith although the 23rd was his birth day. I was notified by our Ward Bishop to beat the meeting and occupy a portion of the day in recollections and memo- rials of Joseph Smith. I spoke half an hour and seldom have I spoken easyer or more to my own satisfaction. ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p134.jpg) I was not in a hurry to publish myself nor solicit oportunities to bless any, but they slowly came in for blessings some to my house and to some I was called at their homes. Saints desirous of learning from the expe- rience of others frequently came to me with questions some of which were impr- oper questions to ask and I freely to them so, bec- ause. they would not be benefited by an answer -- they had better study to make good use of the knowledge they have now. ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p135.jpg) Others were anxious to learn of early events in the history of the Church, in my knowledge. On the evening of the 28th of March 1902 after I had retired for the night early that I might rise early on the following morning to go to Priesthood meeting at Provo, a letter came to me from Joseph B. Keeler one of the Presidency of Utah Stake and Teacher in the B.Y. Academy at Provo which was as follows, and which I answered to him oraly the day following ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p136.jpg) at Provo but still he requested me to answer the letter in detail that he might file it away for future reference. Provo City Utah Mar. 11–1901 Mr. O. B. Huntington Springville, Utah. Dear Brother. A question came up in one of the Book of Mormon classes in Theology the other day regarding a detail pertaining to the translation of the Book of Mormon. The question was this: How did Joseph translate? Did he receive through the Urim and Thummum the meaning of the words ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p137.jpg) that were engraved on the plates and then dictate that meaning to his clerk in his own language, or did the words and sentences of the English language appear on the Urim and Thummim, and then Joseph read these and the scribe take it from his lips. If neither of these was the method, please tell us as much in detail as you know about the manner of the translation of the Book of Mormon. With kind regards I am - respectfully your brother Joseph B. Keeler ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p138.jpg) I wrote to Bro. Keeler as he requested and an sorry I did not keep a copy of the letter. At the quarterly confer ence of the Utah Stake held, I think on the 12th of April 1902 Apostle Reed Smoot prea discou- rse on the two Priesthoods, the Levitical and the Melchesidek in which he stated that a Deacon or Teacher held all the Levitical or Aaronic Priesthood and an Elder in the Melchesideck Priesthood held just as much of the Priesthood ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p139.jpg) as a Seventy, High Priest or one of the 12 apostles. That doctrine was so contrary to any of my ideas or training that I wrote him a letter upon the subject not long after and very carefully differed with him by refering to the 3rd chapter of Moroni upon their form of ordaining Teachers & Deacons, also refered him to the 29th and 30th verses of the 84th Section Doctrine and Covenants where the offices Teachers & Deacons are called appendages to the Aronic Priesthood and the ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p140.jpg) office of Elder is an appe ndage to the Melchesi- dek Priesthood. I stated also that som disputations had arisen in some Ward because those ideas advanced by him were contrary to ou previous teachings. In answer to my'n I recieved the following letter. . . . . . "I have read your letter very carefully and in answer will state that that I would like very much to have you call on me next time you and in Provo and I will explain fully the rema - rks I made at our ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p141.jpg) quarterly conference relative to our 2 orders of Priesthood. I have no doubt in my mind but that I can make myself understood – and it may be that you have the same idea as many others of the church have in regard to the ordination of Brethren to these to Priest- hoods. When you come over I will let you know our positive instructions from President Joseph F. Smith relative to this great ques- tion. With love and best wishes I remain your Brother " Reed Smoot." ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p142.jpg) On the 21st day of May 1902 I was at Provo & called on Brother Smoot who received me very cordialy, giving me plenty of time, expl- anation and reasoning upon that important question referred to. As I can recollect and repeat, it was about this in substance & in short. In the Doctrine & Cov. 29 & 30 verses of 84th Sec the offices referred to as app- endages are like all offices appendages to a governm- ent – not a part or appen- dage of the government. The priesthood is a whole thing or governm ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p143.jpg) ent; is not divided into parts and a man can possess the Aaronic or the Melchesidek Priesthood and hold no office of trust power or authority in the church but he can not hold any office without the Priesthood. Sec. 107 - verse 5 Sayes – "All other offices or authorities in the church are appendages to this Priesthood." Showing clearly that all offices are added to and not a part of the Priesthood our conversation was mutualy pleasant and instructive, he stating that he formerly ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p144.jpg) took the same view of the subject that I did. I asked him if he Believed differently now. " I know differently," was his answer. Then I replied with my whole heart "if you know to the contrary of your former views I can know and must know the same." "I will know" I saw clearly that the Presidency of the Chu- rch & quorum of Apostles holding to that view of the indivisibility of the Priesthood, (which Bro. Smoot asserted) I could not and must not ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p145.jpg) hold to a different view or belief. Brother Smoot said that he knew he was right in his Discourse." I could not, nor could any other man know he was not right provided he knew he was right, so I settled into the conv- iction that my previous opinion was incorrect. May June 31st X -–1902 was stake Priesthood meeting at Provo. During the business part of the meeting I was called to the stand to make a report of my labors as a Patriarch _ what I had done and how ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p146.jpg) I did it. After I spoke President John recounted the names and number of Patriarchs in the Stake and the inability of all to go from ward to ward and bless the people - then turning to me he said you are the youngest of them and are best able to go among the people and we want you to get out among the saints and bless them. He spoke at some length of the use and importance of Patriarchs and Pariarchal blessings. I had blessed 25. before Following him President Keeler read from Book of D. & C. Sec. 124 commencing at 91st verse several verses and then read 124th ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p147.jpg) verse of same section, giving the appointment of Hyrum Smith as Patriarch and the power conferred upon him by the Lord. President Keeler said that his (Hyrums) labors & power specified, to the whole church, was conferr- ed upon each Patriarch in his respective Stake. From that time I felt myself in duty bound to go to work vigorously to fill my calling and make it honorable, or honor it. While at the meeting that day I arranged with Bishop Hans Jorgensen of Lake view ward to be there on the 8th of June (Sunday) ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p148.jpg) I was there at sunday school and spoke a little while and at meeting in afternoon I occupied most of the time Blessed 2 girls that evening at the Bishops residence. Brother John Smith Presiding Patriarch went home with me Sunday evening and promised he would send a circular to Presidents of Stakes with instructions as I devised, after a long talk of the labors & duties of Patriarchs and irregularities existing. Monday July 14 – 1902 I transferred to John Smith the privilege I had promis- ed me of blessing a ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p151.jpg) number of saints, which ocupied him all day and he returned home that evening. I sat by the side of the Presiding Patri- arch all day listening & learning. July 24 – 1902 - I took my grand daughter Eva Clark to Payson - 12 miles to spe- nd the day with the "sons & daughters of the Pioneers" because she had never been at Payson nor to such an outing and been a mother to 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and a mother to her father and as such I introduced ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p152.jpg) her to Apostle John Henry Smith, Patriarch John Smith President Page of the Nebo Stake, M. One sunday a teacher asked me to tell about the Prophet Joseph and the translation of Book of Mormon. While talking 3 bad boys kept talking too _ whispering. I remarked to them that if they did not stop I would. They were still ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p155.jpg) about one minute and then went on whispering. I sat down. The teacher stood up before them & portrayed their bad conduct & got a prom ise they would keep still & then wanted me to finish the narration I had begun. I refused to waste talk before such boys any more. They afterward asked the Teacher to get me to finish the talk, but I never did -- believing a severe reproof & refusal would do them most good of any thing. The Bishop frequently called me to pray in ----- new page (MSS162_S1_B1_F10_I1_p156.jpg) meetings and especialy to offer special prayer at Fast-day meetings. A very fine large school house was built with all modern up-to-date fixtu- res & appliances and at the formal pulic dedicat- tion on Nov. 10 1903 I was chosen to offer Dedicatory Prayer. Springville, Utah Co., Nov. 26.—Last evening a happy family gathering took place in honor of our aged and re- spected couple, Patriarch O. B. Hunt- ington and wife, who celebrated their golden wedding at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Thos. H. Mendenhall. A delicious supper was served, after which speeches, songs, recitations and reminiscences made the evening pass very pleasantly. Mr. and Mrs. Huntington recounted events of their married life which con- trasted greatly with present conditions surrounding the young people of Utah. The songs, "There is silver in your hair, Jessie," and "Dear Heart, We're grow- ing Old," were specially appropriate.
